Best for older children and teens.

Another Marguerite Henry masterpiece β a beautiful fictional story about a boy's bond with the Godolphin Arabian, one of the founding sires of the modern Thoroughbred. Common questions about classic horse books.
If you ask a random person to name a book about horses, chances are this will be the book they name. One of the best horse books out there, Black Beauty, is a story written by Anna Sewell about a horse's life through his own perspective. The book is very touching and has some very sweet moments, but it also shows the evil of animal abuse which makes it appropriate for an older audience. Luckily, there is a children's edition of this classic, which while not written by Anna Sewell is based on her book and still provides a great story.

I Am The Great Horse by Katherine Roberts is not a classic horse book in its age (as it was published on 2006) but rather its story. Similar to Anna Sewell's book Black Beauty, this horse book is from the perspective of a horse, but not just any horse. In fact, it is from the perspective of Alexander the Great's horse, Bucephalas. The book takes you through Alexander the Great's battles and rule but also explores the relationship we all have with horses.

You might have seen the movie adaptation of War Horse by Steven Spielberg but never read the book, so why should you? Well the book is more in depth than the movie, as most books are, which in my opinion makes it a point in the book's favor. Additionally, the book is told from the perspective of the horse which gives an additional layer of meaning.

If I had to take a guess at the most well-known race horse of all time, I would choose Secretariat. Sure, there are other famous race horses such as Man O 'War, Seabiscuit, and American Pharaoh, but Secretariat is the horse that racing and non-racing fans alike seem to be drawn to and know about. So it is no surprise that there have been so many books and movies written about him. But this book, The Horse God Built, is different from the others as it explores the journey of Eddie Sweat, Secretariat's groom.

Another well known and extremely popular horse book is My Friend Flicka. This heartwarming tale is about a boy who struggles fitting in and finds a friend in a horse. While the main story is about a boy and a horse, there is also a lot of lessons on family and relationships. Even though there are several movie adaptations of this book, nothing truly compares to the book. However, I would not recommend this book for younger children.
