This year we chose to do a Wizard of Oz theme because we like to do timeless classics but we are also obsessed with Wicked!! I've been thinking about doing this theme for a while and felt like this year was only fitting with the new movie.
How did I make each is below!
Wicked Witch - easy! I had a dress from another costume, a prop broom, a hat, got some green facepaint and boom! Wicked :)
Tin man - silver table cloths from amazon, a spray painted funnel, fabric paint, and my Cricut machine
Scarecrow - reused costumes from other times!
Lion - pinned stretchy fleece and felt to a bonnet and halter to make his mane and ears! Then a badge of courage with my Cricut
Glinda - reused costume again! And sceptre made from a foam ball and drink stirrers that my Grandfather collected over the years
Tornado - this was the most challenging! It's made from styrofoam wreath bases, metal rods, tulle, and farm animals tied on with fishing line. It's attached by an elastic band around his belly and the bottom part of the tornado pinned to a shoulder guard
Dorothy - a thrifted tablecloth and fabric reused from the previous year, I sewed the dress together and made the straps from the table cloths. Her braids were already made from another costume as well
Wicked Witch of the East - my friend made the house and when she wasn't in the house dressed in the classic ruby slippers which were made from Goodwill shoes and painted and striped stockings we already had
As I mentioned, we already had a lot of the costumes and props but I would say each costume averaged around $20 depending on what we didn't already have!
We wore the costumes to our farm's annual Halloween parade.
Our horses, as always were saints not only about their costumes but also ours. I can't believe our horses were so tolerant of the cardboard house, literally wearing a tornado, a lion mane in his face, and my green face and pointy hat! However, one of our horses does NOT like mini horses and there were 3 in attendance so we let Dorothy head home early :) My big grey tin man is 30 years old so he's seen it all!
Each year I do this I'm reminded why by the reaction from families and kids. We had some people in the community come just to watch the parade and they were in awe not only of the costumes but how kind our horses were. One little boy kept running back to give my horse treats and pets every time we went by.
