CHAPTER ONE

It was a beautiful morning when, in the distance I could hear our rooster crowing. Well, I guess that's my wake up call, I say to myself.

So I hop out of my bed and grab a pair of jeans, a t-shirt and my riding boots. Living on a farm may seem a little harsh to some people but to me its' life. Yeah you have to get up early, walk or ride the four wheeler to the barn, feed and water the animals. Then clean out the horses stalls, also get them out and exercising all of them. Wow, that's a lot of work but, the truth is I love this life.

Anyway, back to my story. After I get ready I run down stairs, grab a toast and run out before my family could say hey or good morning. I run out to the garage and am about to get on the four wheeler when I noticed the key wasn't in it. Of course he would take it, the little brat. I say to myself, my little brother, Daniel, hates it when I use his four wheeler to go to the barn. Well I guess I'm walking.

When I get to the barn all the animals are raising cane because they didn't get there breakfast on time. "Oh, pipe down. You'll get it soon enough!" I say. I get to the barn door and find the key, when I have it, I unlock the door and go into the feed room. If your wondering how this place looks, well I guess like any old farm, with goats, chickens, horses, and cows.

I grab four buckets and set them on the floor at my feet, then I grab a scoop and scoop out two scoops each for my two black percherons, Bonnie and Bell. Then I scoop out one and a half for my other quarter horse, Smokey. I take those buckets to their stalls and poor them in their trough. I head back to the feed room and poor out one more one and a half scoop into the fourth bucket. This bucket is for my jumping horse, Roxie, she stands 16 hh tall and is a beautiful tabiano paint. I take her food out to the paddock where shes staying but, before I go I grab her a treat. When I get there shes already waiting by her bucket. I poor her her feed and give her the treat.

I tell her, "Get ready Roxie we have a show coming up this weekend. This is going to be a lot different than usual, we'll be competing cross-country. But don't worry its for amateurs so it wont be as hard." After I got done talking to her I went back to the barn to lock up. I say to myself, We have hard working day planned for tomorrow so I guess I'll give her a break today.

After I locked up I went back home to celebrate. Oh, I almost forgot to mention it's 4th of July, so Happy Holiday.

Chapter 2

Ring! Ring! Ring! Ugh.. the sound of a alarm clock going off, not the first thing you want to hear in the morning. So, I hit the snooze and climb out of bed. The big day is this weekend and we have to leave today to go to Pensacola. I got a lot of work to do like, get my bags packed, clean Roxie, feed all of the animals, get all the equipment, and a lot of other stuff.

After I put on some blue shorts and a black t-shirt, I grab my horse covered rain boots and head out the door. When I get down stairs nobody is awake, It's around 5:30 a.m. and my breakfast wasn't made yet.

When I get to the barn and open the big sliding doors, all of the animals are already waiting. I get all of their buckets ready and poor the feed in their troughs. While all the animals are eating I head into the tack room to gather all of Roxie's stuff.

After all of her stuff is gathered and put by the tack room door, I grab her halter and lead. I head over to where her stall is and open the door. She was eating hay when I put the halter on and lead her out to the wash rack. All the soaps and shampoos are already there, I tie her to the pole and grab the water hose. After I hose her down, I grab the shampoo and a sponge. I squirt some shampoo on the sponge and start at her neck.

When I get through, I tie her up in the sun to dry, while I run inside to eat breakfast. My mom and dad are sitting in their usual places, on either side of the table, and my little brother is sitting in the middle. I come in and sit down in front of a steaming plate of eggs, bacon, and grits. We make small talk as usual, just some, did you feed everything or are the animals doing ok.

Then my dad said, "Sarah, it's your birthday coming up and you'll be 14. What would you like for your birthday?" I thought about it real hard and said, "A black Arabian Cross."
