Horse problems

Hi!

My filly (Foxy 1yo) has recently been bucking every time I go to see her, it started when I made a mistake by rewarding her out of fear when she bucked... we were just doing in hand trotting, and I have an apple in my hand, she got over excited and started bucking, I got scared (since she towers over me being a purebred clydesdale) and without thinking threw the apple at her and fled away so to not get hurt... since then she bucks all the time expecting treats... this happened multiple times, I never got seriously injured, only a scrape down the back of my heel once, now I'm scared to even go into her paddock (she loves people and if you step in her paddock she gallops over to you and starts playing) she's fine over a fence, but when you step into her paddock she gets REALLY pushy... and I'm embarrassed to say that I'm scared of my own horse :( any tips on how to safely fix this?

Breyer fest

So is anyone going to go to the 2019 Breyer Fest this year in Kentucky? It is from July 12-14. They have such cool stuff there and it is a totally horse crazy place. Also if you have Breyer models you can show them and win ribbons for them . So if you didn't know about it I'd definitely check it out.

Burn the croup. Horses do not like to be bossed around so they will not obey you if you're just getting mad at him. We want horses to want to obey us not be scared into doing things. And it sounds like he wants you off his back cause his angry with you.

You have to be patient with him and become his friend so that he wants to please you and wants you to be his leader! Try making it fun when you work with him and do things that he thinks is fun. You and your horse have to be friends before you can have an enjoyable ride.

The number one rule of training is have fun! Hope this helped and remember be patient!

Stinker butt pony

Hi, I lease a pony and when I am just riding (not in a lesson) he is either really good or he is a brat. Some of the troubles I have been haveing with him are: skipping all of his corners, running me into the rail, breaking every few steps in his canter and him not listening to my leg or croup.

I think Hoofbeats is right. Make him lift his feet higher when walking by ground works and stuff. It's kind of like my llama rusty, he drags his feet all the time so making him walk over rocks is making him improve.

I have a horse who does the same thing when his head is down. What I do recommend is that you collect your reins (when you ride) so it makes him look up.

Another tip is, ride him over trot poles. Not just once, but until he doesn't bang his feet on them. Literally. It may take a bunch of rides to achieve this but it should make him left his feet up higher so he doesn't trip.

First, check his hooves and make sure nothing is wrong with his feet. If nothing is wrong then start riding him somewhere not bumpy and lead him around. Try to slow him down and have him put his head down so he starts looking where he's going.

If this doesn't help then watch him walk and see if you can't find out what's wrong. If you find any clues let us know so we can help you find out why he keeps tripping!

Sounds like your horse doesn't have much respect for you. I'd try gaining his respect by trying some ground work with him. You can find all sorts of helpful vids on YouTube on how to do ground work. I'd recommend looking up Little Red Cowgirl on YouTube. She has tons of groundwork vids that have been very helpful to me.(;

Hi Olivia, you might want to take your horse to the vet :(

This is a tricky one cause it could mean different things like oral pain, colic pain or just discomfort but the most important thing to keep in mind is that he might have abdominal pain. Take stock of the situation and make sure there are no other signs of colic.

If you have doubts observe your horse closely for a few minutes, and if you still have questions, call your veterinarian. Most times when your horse yawns, however, he is likely to be just fine and doing what horses do.

I've just started some bad habits

So guys, I had to stop riding with my regular trainer to take dressage from a different trainer for this dressage show. So I was away from my normal trainer for about a month.

When dressage ended, I went back to my trainer and it was my first lesson since dressage ended. My trainer told me I was riding all wrong and I saw it too.

Well, when I was posting I was jutting my hips out or something like that (if you get what I mean). Also, during sitting trot I was leaning back and putting my legs to forward. Then when I cantered I was just like jello.

So my trainer was like, "you are away from me for a month and you come back to me with a bunch of bad habits."

Does anyone know why this is happening to me? Did dressage mess me up? Or like what? I am like freaking out right now. Okay guys, thanks so much.

Hey! That is SO sweet!

Make sure that your horse listens to everything you tell him to do. Even if it means going back to the basics.

Also don't try to rush him in his jumping training and other things you want him to do.

I don't know how experienced you or your horse are but I can't wait to hear more about you and him!

I do wear chaps because if you try to match the colours of your boots and chaps, they usually look like top boots! And since top boots are extremely expensive where I live, I think it's great to have that top boot look and yet they aren't too expensive.

Note: if you want to buy chaps, have a good look around because if you want really good quality ones then you can spend a couple of hundred dollars on just chaps. But I got really good ones for less than $30. So like I said, you should look around before you make your final decision.

Half chaps

I actually just got some half chaps and I personally LOVE them. They help so much with gripping, keeping heels down and if you're looking into some schooling shows you have to wear them.

But honestly, it is all up to you. I recommend not getting half chaps right away. Just try your paddock boots and if you feel you need half chaps then go for it. :)

Okay, I haven't worked too much with shy horses but here is what I've got...

Firstly, you need to gain his trust. Maybe try standing in or near his pasture so he gets used to having people around (and maybe not just you).

I would say that you should stand or sit near or in the pasture (whatever) for only some time and then day after day (possibly) increase the time you stay there.

I think it would be great for him to hear your voice, even if you're not in the pasture. This might take him some time maybe a few weeks, I don't know.

Patience is the key to horse training. Soon, he will hopefully realize that you don't want to harm him in anyway.

Leave carrots and/or horse treats in his pasture and let him eat them even if you don't see him do it.

It's all about gaining his trust and bonding with him.

Don't look at the horse in the eye when you approach him and make your way to him from the side (the shoulder) or he might freak out if you approach him from the front or back.

Then when he does let you near him eventually, try grooming him, trying a halter on, etc. But when he does let you near him, fold a small hessian bag or cloth-or something like it- and rub it all over his body.

If he stays calm while you do this then increase the size of the bag until you are rubbing his body with the whole bag. Don't rush him, this might take longer than expected.

I don't know how much experience you have in horse gentling/training so I just wrote what I thought would be needed.

I'm sure the other girls have great ideas too, so anyone else? Please tell us if you have any more problems!

Try letting that horse get used to you. Stand by or sit on the fence and just watch him. Try talking to his owner about his bad care.

Once he starts to get used to you, start spending time with him. Feed him carrots and apples, try brushing him, petting him and talking to him.

Getting a horse is a huge step in the horse world. Try discussing alternatives with your parents. If you don't already, try taking lessons or volunteering.

Oh, that's so sad. It must be hard to see a horse like that. He is not owned by your family, correct?

You could talk to your parents or another adult about the horse and see if they think it should be reported. Maybe your parents would be more likely to get you a horse if they see how much you care for this one.

You could also start by asking for riding lessons, or even volunteering at a barn, horse rescue, or therapy riding center.

And don't forget to show responsibility and be really nice to your parents. I hope this helps.

If the horse is being neglected, you should contact the authorities and tell them about it.

If you want to ride but you don't have a horse, you can always go to riding lessons.

I want a horse too but I know that nagging my parents about it won't help so I usually drop it. I take lessons anyway.

If you show enough responsibility and offer to pay for half or a quarter of the horse's expenses they MIGHT let you get one.

For the trust issue, you should spend as much time with this horse as possible and your visiting time should be at the same time everyday, that way the horse knows when to expect you.

Treats do help. Never break the trust you have with the horse after you've attained it. Right now, the horse is not sure whether you're "OK" or not.

Hey! I would suggest visiting the horse next to you every day and while you visit just sit and talk to her/him. Keep up a steady flow of talk and that will get this horse to know your voice and learn to trust you.

Also, laugh if you can. Horses LOVE laughter. And don't look her/him directly in the eyes if he/she comes near you because in horse language that is an aggressive action.

Just try to let the horse feel love and want a part of your happiness so he/she will gain your trust.

As for persuading your parents to let you get a horse.... well I'm sorry to say I can't help you there. I've been wanting a horse since I was 5 years old and I still don't have one.... my family just can't afford one right now. If the reason you can't get a horse is because of money maybe you could try and get some jobs or something to help you earn the money to buy a horse.

And PRAY! God always answers whether it's with a no, a yes or a wait. Hope this helps horse girl!

It sounds like you need to let Pela know YOU are the boss.

I suggest riding her on more contact. If you don't know what that means, it means having shorter reins and keeping contact on the horses mouth with the bit. Also seat contact. Be sure you are asking her correctly. Sometimes the slightest mistakes can confuse a horse a lot.

Ask your trainer for help. That is what they are there for.

Also, I would recommend trying to work with Pela from the ground maybe some tricks and a lot of grooming and treats to bond with her. The more she trusts and knows you, the more obedient she will be.

OK, that's a bit of a tough one but I'll give you all the advice I have about this problem!

You need to show Pela that you're the boss.

Also, make sure you're giving her the right signals to make her do what YOU want her to do and where YOU want her to go.

You might not have enough contact through your seat.

In case you don't know what that means, you need to keep contact with your legs and the amount of weight you let "rest" in the saddle.

Is she a fast or a slow horse? Please answer and then we (the other girls and I) can possibly give you a better answer.

OK, I'm so glad that the info was helpful!

You asked if it was better to be in group lessons or in privates. It depends on you. I personally like private lessons more because my instructor can only focus on me, but private lessons are more expensive than the group lessons, where I ride. So I only have private lessons if I won it or something like that.

So, it depends if you can afford it and how you feel about it.

Horses tend (in a group lesson) to follow the other horse in front of them so if you choose to have group lessons also look for opportunities to ride in an arena by yourself.

This also helps to know what you need to work on in communicating with your horse.

And now since I have quite a lot of experience, I now put my riding to good use and teach the less experienced riders.

That's my advice, hope it helps!

Thanks so much everyone! I will have to remember these tips for (hopefully!) the next time I ride. One thing that did sort of help me once on a big stubborn Paint mare named Omni was to kick further behind the girth. Not sure why that would make a difference, but it helped a bit.

Hi Haddie! I have a horse at my barn named Elvis who is really lazy. I suggest actually not kicking him. First squeeze him, if he doesn't respond circle him once or twice and ask again. If he doesn't move, on ask for a crop. Hope this helps!

I used to ride a lazier horse and I also thought to just kick harder but it never worked. It didn't have effect on the horse's gait so I tried to reverse my thinking. Instead of kicking as hard as possible, I gently kicked not once but several times and the horse responded way more willingly. I hope this makes sense.

Well...you COULD kick them harder, but I'm not the one who would want to kick very hard, either.

Getting a lazy horse excited around other horses may bring some spirit into them and get them out of their laziness. Also, if you're lazy, the horse will be lazy, but if they sense your... I don't know, spirit, that may get them to move.

I seriously don't know what I'm talking about right now, but it might work.. :)

I would recommend doing private lessons as a beginner. After a while, you can move up to group lessons. Honestly, its your choice though. You learn more in private as you get one on one time with your trainer.

Here are some tips about finding the best riding school for you!

What to look for:
- A clean, neat and tidy yard and stable
- Contented, relaxed horses or ponies
- Well-turned out, helpful staff
- A businesslike but friendly atmosphere
- Properly-equipped riders - no one should be allowed to ride unless they are wearing a hat or helmet, correctly secured with a chin strap, and safe footwear

What to avoid:
- dirty, untidy premises
- Unkempt staff
- Scruffy and/or dejected looking horses
- Lack of professional supervision
- People riding in any old clothes: baggy jeans, trainers or "willies", and with no helmet

I hope this really helps you to find the best riding school possible for you!

MKrider, when looking for a stable, here are some things I would look for:

-Price. Of course, you don't want it TOO expensive, first of all.

-Horses. Like, how the horses are treated and cared for. You would want them to be treated nicely, not roughly and used.

-People. Are the people there devoted and kind, or are they just doing it for money?

-Location. It also depends on if it's far away or not from your house.

And I guess that's all I would say. I don't have practically any experience at all about this, so if someone else could help...?

Well, here are some ideas!

Go through all of your things and ask your parents if you can sell them. Either have one of your parents help you sell them on Ebay or have a yard sale. Remember, you have to sacrifice some.

If you live in a neighborhood with dogs ask around to walk them or watch them while there out of town. Any pets will do. Also, ask your neighbors if they need anything around the yard done such as weeding, mowing, wiping windows down, trimming bushes the options are endless!

Ask relatives if they need things done. Maybe your uncle or aunt needs you to wash the car or even your parents might give you five bucks to do it. Also, ask your neighbors if they need their car washed or waxed.

If you ride at a stable, talk to your instructor or the owner about working there. Maybe, just maybe, they will let you for some cash.

Sounds like a hard situation! I've always wanted a horse, but can never get one due to money that I can't earn.

What do you like doing? If you like making jewelry or crafts, you could have a sale to sell them - people buy these kind of things, especially when you tell them the cause for your sale.

If you like cooking, you could have a back sale! It works out pretty good, I've heard.

Or you could maybe even get a job at a stable, if they let you get payed for it! :)

I don't have a horse... but really want one. Our family doesn't have the money for one and I couldn't make do raising money for it. So, I think I'll just get a horse when I'm older and have a job. :) I hope you get the money you need for a horse!

Oh, and another thing, you could sell things that you don't use anymore on websites like ebay, and if you like making homemade things, then you could sell stuff on websites like etsy.

Also, if you tell your customers the cause for you raising money, they might feel better about buying your things, knowing how the money is being used. :)

Depending on the type of discipline of riding you do, should depend on the breed and size of a horse.

If you want a horse for jumping or Hunter, I recommend getting a Quarter Horse, that's not as stocky, an Arabian, or perhaps a Thoroughbred.

50 euros for boarding isn't a lot for boarding, and in fact very cheap to the price of boarding in America.

And adopting a horse from a rescue isn't a bad option either, although usually, (depending on the horse) it can take you a while it earn it's trust.

I love all horses, no matter what gender. And like everyone else said, it's a personal preference, but... I personally have to go with geldings. Mainly because when mares go into season, it's sometimes very hard to have a pleasurable ride, and I don't really have the patience for that.

Hope you enjoy your horse when you get him/her!!!

You're so lucky!

The size of your horse actually depends on your preference. Do you like ponies, medium or large? If you like medium, go for a 15 hh horse. If you like large, go for maybe a 16 but I warn you its going to be very big but you will eventually grow into it.

Breed is also a preference of yours. If you like willing, fast strong horses go for a quarter horse. If you like docile and willing, go for an Arabian. But in my opinion, the best first horses are stock type breeds such as paints, quarter horses and appaloosas.

For age, go for a horse around 10 years old. But if you are much more experienced than that I would go for a maybe 7 year old.

Second hand tack is fine just as long as its in good quality and you're not wasting your money and that it fits the horse you're going to buy. Grooming tools really don't matter.

And lastly, the mare or gelding is a preference question. I love geldings as they're very sweet and willing but also a bit spirited and can be stubborn. I also love mares for their sweet and stubborn personalities and they are also willing to please.

I, personally, would probably go for buying the whole grooming kit with all the stuff already in it.

I think you should get a mare, but it's really up to you. Maybe think of a few names, then, if it's a girl name, choose the girl, and if it's a boy name, then choose the boy. Just an option.

There's a town and you have to memorize the map because they don't give it to you and I don't know the name and I've been searching for years now. I played it between 2011 and 2013 but I don't think it was new.

Dakota is a very smart and energetic horse (can open any door), but he can be quite mean sometimes. He has a tendency to kick, buck, and bite.

Sorry posting here didn't know where else but I think you guys can really help me. My mom had a book I read as a kid it was about a black stallion named King.

He had a herd and lived on a ranch that let them free roam. The sequel was about his son who was a white stallion who was wild and bashed a rider who was trying to tame him into the ranch sign board and they deemed him cursed.

Anyone know the books? My mom is no longer here and I can not find the books but I'd love to read them again.

I myself started cantering recently in September but my tips are to keep heels down, shoulders back and seat deep in the saddle.

It also helps to work on some leg building exercises such as squats and work on two point over ground poles to build your muscles.

If you want, you can ask your trainer if you could canter on the lunge line for a lesson or two until you're confident enough to canter on your own.

I just am starting to canter off the lunge line as of mid-October. Hope this helps!

So you asked how is the best way to canter...

Well, just keep your hands soft on the horse's mouth because if there is too much pressure, it hurts their mouth so they try to run away from the pain so that equals a fast canter.

Also, keep your heels down and try to have a deep seat, meaning that you don't bounce around in the saddle.

But it also depends on how fast the horse is. Like if the horse is a slower one then it is easier to have a light seat. (Having a light seat is a bit hard for me to explain.)

But if the horse is faster then you need to "roll" back your shoulders (they move back and when you do that it will make your weight sink down into the saddle telling your horse to slow down into the saddle and also do half halts which is when you pull gently on the reins and then gently releasing). It works on all the gaits that I have learned at my stable.

Hi girlfriends! I was cantering for the first time on Friday. Yay!

I was doing really well and Dreams was being so good, until she started to gallop. Eek!!! I had never cantered before, let alone gallop, so I started to panic. And of course, I fell off.

My arm is really sore, but I'm mostly disappointed in myself! I really thought I could do it! Btw, I did it again, and didn't fall off, but it wasn't for long!

Anyway, I need advice! How is the best way to canter? Heels down, and stuff like that, I know, but I need some advice from my fellow, more experienced riders! Please help!

I love horses and I am going riding next week but I don't wear pants. So I am wondering if this is suitable for riding -- I'm wearing a long top and leggings. Will it get in the way? The top is long, but it's about 2.5 inches above my knees. I'm 5'1". My biggest fear is people will think I'm weird because I don't wear jods or breeches.

How about your dad? All I can say is to somehow convince (I guess) the instructor to let you. I would say even go to the stable owner and tell him/her what's going on. These lessons you take cost money you know, and if you're not being taught the right things at the right time, that's not very fun for anyone. :\ I don't have any experience with this, and it's hard to think of something you could do... :)

Hey guys! I've been riding for 1 year twice a month and my trainer has been promising she would teach me to canter for 3 months but every single time she says next time and it never happens. All we do is trot around and diagonal and stuff but I've mastered it.

I know my diagonals and posting, I have a great seat and I have learned to go over small crossrails. But my trainer is teaching me nothing new and I can't stand it!! What should I do? And switching barns is too expensive...

He may not be used to people too much, and he might not have a great past. He needs to know that he can trust you, and be confident with you.

You have to practice getting him to trust you. So find out his favorite treat, and see how close he'll let you get. Then stand there with your hand out. Don't look at him though, so either face the ground or to the side... etc. Just stand there, and he may get interested in what and why you're doing that!

If he comes closer, don't look up still. Stay where you are, don't make sudden movements. If he wants to take the treat, he might get close enough for him to reach it. Then if he does take it, do it the next day. (well, even if he doesn't take it) ;)

Do it every day, and after a while, (when you and him feel comfortable) pet him. Stroke his face, and find his soft spot! I really am not the horse expert, so if this doesn't work, well, I tried!

Sometimes that is right, sadly. Cause horses usually go for a higher price, unless it is a lower end breed that people (sadly again) won't want.

Like if it's not a purebred, people may not want it if they are breeders and stuff. Plus it's not that the horse is "bad", it's just maybe not trained, or it has some medical issues, something like that.

My mom has said something like that before, too. I know how you feel! :)

He needs to know that you're not going to hurt him but if he does get a bit naughty then you need to show him who's boss (you!).

There is this horse at the stable where I ride and he sometimes kicks, and someone told me that you need to swing a lead rope at him until he gives it up.

Do you know a spot where he likes to be scratched?
If you do and when he lets you come near to him scratch him there, so he knows that you're not going to hurt him and build up from there. It may take some time but I read in a book that patience is a horse woman's best friend!!!

This is what I found on the internet, because I do not know much about it. I do know things here and there about it thought.

It's important to understand that "colic" is not a diagnosis but a description of symptoms. Colic simply means that a horse has abdominal pain and this can occur for many different reasons, including pain in other areas of the body. It's when you get a diagnosis of the CAUSE of the colic that you actually know what is going on with a horse.

So that's what/why horses get colic. Anyone want to add? Yeah, I feel that I didn't do very well on this one. :)

Volunteering at one is free if the stable wants volunteers, and you work for free. Though you could get a job at a stable and get paid, but not all stables do that. But that's what I would suggest! :)

Maybe try using a hackamore, which is a bit-less bridle. She may have only used hackamores, and is not used to bits. It's hard to break a horse that's past the best breaking age. Well, that's all I can say! I don't own a horse, but I do know a few things, and this could be right, which I hope it is.

Your horse may be lonely, or need a friend. Horses are herd animals, so if you have another horse or cow or donkey - something - she may just need some company! Maybe she's so fat because:

1. she grazes too much, or

2. She eats too much because of the feed you give her along WITH her grazing.

Considering she is 7 years old, she is going to be harder to train. How long have you had her? I suggest working with her in short time spans rewarding her for doing well, and not letting her get away with things. Do not punish her though! If needed, find a friend or a trainer who knows a lot to help you out.

Hey guys. I have tried to get her to realize Peppy is terrified of her in a nice way. I said it gently. She doesn't care. I have tried to explain to my instructor about this but she doesn't understand.

I seriously don't mind if she likes Peppy that's fine but she scares him and it makes me a little mad. She likes one of the other horses, Trixie, but she keeps trying to get on my nerves. I don't have weight loss suggestions, except for look online, but don't give up! Just think how worth it it would feel your first time back in the saddle. :)

And about self confidence - it doesn't matter if everyone else is skinnier. I believe God created you and me perfectly just how we are!

I've never worked with an unbroke horse, but I'd just say spend a lot of time with him (grooming, etc.) cause it sounds like you have a good relationship with him on the ground. If you can carry that trust into lunging and riding that should help.

Go slow, it's worth it, and make sure he knows you're in control. Also, try to find someone with more experience to talk to. Hope this helps!

Maybe look up, "How to ride a horse that bucks" or "How to ride a horse that doesn't want to be ridden" or "How to ride a horse that isn't broke." That's all. I really am sorry.

But I wouldn't give up on him! Though if you feel that you should then you can. But I haven't seen, pet, or even know him, so I can't say that for sure. :) I hope you will be able to ride him someday! :D

This is a hard one... She knows that Peppy does not like her for one (she's just trying to cause problems). Talk to your riding instructor about it and maybe let her try to pet Peppy, then he will not act up as much.

But as for her, you need to take a deep breath, and talk to her about it. She needs to realize that it's not nice (I know that sounds childish..) to act like that! That's where the riding instructor comes in. But maybe say, "Can't you tell that you are scaring him?" But say it more... kindly. Cause anyone who is around horses can tell that Peppy, does NOT like you. Let the new girl try to pet Peppy ever so often, so that he realizes that she won't hurt him (cause she can't hurt him or she'll be in trouble!)

And I don't think that she's trying to "hurt" Peppy in a way, but trying to "hurt" you! She probably knows that you and Peppy have a bond and she's jealous! So she may be trying to break the bond between you and Peppy. But this is hard, so if anyone else has anything to add, please do! Hope I was some sort of help! :)

For one, there is NOTHING wrong with you. You were made this way and people can't judge you for it! It's what's inside that counts! And if you need to lose weight in order to ride then do your best!

Show your mom that you are willing to do this and want to ride! She can help you if you ask! But exercise, eat healthy with the right balance of foods, and say NO to sweet things for a while. :)

And try, keep trying! Maybe you won't have riding lessons too soon, but that's not your fault! People shouldn't be held back for what they love, but if that's the way it has to be, just do your best! You are fearfully and wonderfully made! And no one can change you!

That's all I can help you with, now you need to act on it (which I know you've tried) and keep going! And since you've seen yourself lose weight already, don't lose hope! That means it's working! You may not even notice at first, but keep going! Keep your self confidence! It will help you through this!

Just think, "Do I want to ride horses?" And answer, "YES!" So then think, "I know I can!" Cause everyone can lose weight, especially if it's to ride horses. :)

There is this new girl at my barn who is quite snobby and likes Peppy, my favorite horse as you all know. She scares him. Every time he sees her, he lays his ears back, stomps his hoof and sometimes he trembles. It takes a lot to calm him down. I'm the only one who can.

She also thinks Peppy likes her and it's really bothering me. I mean, Peppy and I have a bond and I don't want it being broken. How can I keep her from scaring him so badly and liking him? She's mean to him and it makes me very, very, very angry.

Mum says if I lose 10 KGS, I can go riding. I'm not overweight, but I'm not slim either. I really want to go riding!

Alright, here's a trick that I used to do with my horse before he was broke. I hope it works!

To get your horse used to the saddle, you need to get him used to the blanket first. ( I used a western saddle, Do you use that too?)

You take the blanket up to him and let him sniff it for a bit, if he backs away or freaks out just keep on trying the next day. If he doesn't back away, and seems fine with the saddle pad, start rubbing it on his back to get him used to it. Do everything you do on the left side on the right.

Put the saddle pad on and off several times and keep rubbing it on his body for several days until he gets used to it. The saddle can be trickier, because its big and heavy and scary to a horse.

Also, for a horse that isn't broke, you need to get him used to the saddle. (I'm assuming you have one? Some people ride bareback though.) It gets him used to weight on his back.

Lunging him with the saddle on his back also helps him get used to it. And whenever he tries to buck, turn him the other way and make him run faster. That way he learns that if he bucks, he has to keep on running.

I would keep on getting him used to the saddle before you try getting on his back, maybe waiting a few weeks. I know it's long, but he needs to get used to the weight.
Once he's used to the saddle, you can start leaning a little bit of your weight in the saddle but not getting on.

Yeah... maybe try some different things on him. It may even take some time. It would probably help if you spend some time with him every day, like leading him around is a good start.

Try some of the methods people use for breaking a horse. He may be old for that but if you try hard enough and let him know that you trust him, you might get somewhere.

Also, make sure he trusts you. He needs to learn that bucking is not okay. This is a tough one so hope this helped! :)

Hey!

I used to own a horse of my own, but we gave him away.

You always should have an adult or parent by you when you mount your horse, but you should lunge him before you get on him. If he's all tired out, he won't want to buck you off, and he should learn that bucking you off is bad.

If you don't ride much, definitely look into getting riding lessons because they are fun, and you can learn a lot from them.

I do not own a horse but I do know a few things about this. For one, always be gentle but firm when needed.

Everyday, try to get him used to being ridden. You may want someone to help. Maybe have someone hold the horse when you decide to get on. First, maybe have someone lead him when riding. And whoever is leading him should be an adult.

The next time you mount onto him, sit up on his back for a little bit, then, have someone walk him a little. Make sure you spend time with him when not riding. Get a relationship with him. Even if you already do.

Also, reward him when he does a good job when you ride him. Talk to him when riding. Gradually increase how long you ride him each day and try trotting when you feel comfortable with him. He needs to earn your trust when riding.

I know that your horse has potential. He really does! And if nothing works, maybe ask a professional. If not, ask someone with more experience in horses like yours.

But no matter what, your horse is still a good horse! :) Love on him and don't give up! (Maybe you can if a professional can't help him... but I doubt it.) ;)
