THE SPIRIT OF A GIRL AND HER HORSE

"No! Scamp! Come back! Scamp, here, come here boy! SCAAAAAAAMP!!!!!" the girl called out, the misty rain stinging her eyes and trickling in a sharp, icy manner down her face like a warning of what was about to come.

The small, scruffy pony beneath her pricked his fluffy ears forward and whinnied, not in a playful and silly way, but in a worried, shrill call. He was as agitated as his rider was. That was the thing. The thing that was so sad about the misfortune about to come, Aleyah and Puffin could understand each other. It was like there was some mystical connection between the loyal team....

"Oh, Scamp! Scamp! Come back here!!" Aleyah whispered in a desperate, ragged whisper. "Oh Puff. What can we do? Oh look, just GREAT. It's snowing now! A little puppy, lost on a long lonely moor, in the rain and now snow," the way she spat out the word 'snow' indicated her utter scorn and loathing for the weather at such an inconvenient time.

The little hero of a pony beneath the desperate girl plunged forwards, like a determined medieval charger. Only this time, the target wasn't some poor, most likely soon-to-be-dead, soul. It was the bad fortune sneaking up on the dastardly situation.

Aleyah didn't hold back. She trusted this pony more than her own family. This one-in-a-million- no, hundred thousand trillion- companion had took her through 6 amazing, adventurous, utterly unforgettable years. She would happily sit back and chill with her life in the hooves of Puffin.

So they galloped on.

STAY TUNED FOR PART TWO! MY FINGERS ARE SORE FROM TYPING.....

THE SPIRIT OF A GIRL AND HER HORSE - Part 2

Heavy pounding rang in Aleyah's ears. It could have been the galloping hooves beneath her or the pumping beat of her own fear-filled heart.

"SCAMMMP!" she called out her beloved dog's name out again. She preferred not to think what had most likely happened to her little Jack Russel by now...

Wrapping her icy fingers in Puffin's coarse, weather-beaten mane, Aleyah gripped harder and kicked on. Puffin responded immediately and surged forwards even more- Aleyah swore it was faster then they ever have gone.

The thick mist blurred past in a flurry of wind, the pair speeding past in such a breeze the force would have knocked any on-looker of their feet.
Thunder roared overhead. A streak of lightning crackled in the unknown distance. A tiny yelp rang from a patch of marshy land...

"Scamp!" Aleyah whispered. Together they had found Scamp! Aleyah, sitting astride the small grey pony bareback, tugged on the makeshift headcollar and leadrope bridle, attempting to steer Puffin round the rocky track leading to the deadly bog from which desperate yaps were erupting.

But Puffin had other ideas.

Instead of taking the longer but safer route, Puffin had realised the awful danger the tiny puppy was in, being sucked under the thick substance unable to draw breath anymore. The heroic, brave little steed took the direct path to rescue. But wasn't it terribly slippery?

"AAAAGGHH!!!"

Before she knew it, Aleyah was tumbling down a muddy slope pinned underneath the thrashing grey pony. The shaking world was swirling around her as she tried to scream, but found her voice stuck in her throat with shock. All she could do was curl into a protective ball and wait for it all to end.

Finally, after what seemed like hours, Aleyah could reach out and free the squirming puppy from the grip of the bubbling swamp. Amazingly, he had survived! Rascal was alive! But as she laid eyes on her courageous little hero, she started to doubt all three of them were definitely safe....and alive.
