"Hey Courtney!" 10 year old Mariah called from across the playground. While she was jogging up to Courtney she thought of how to make discussion over her favorite thing in the world...horses!

"When are we gonna' do the horse date?" Asked Courtney.

"Tomorrow." Mariah replied.

"Yes!"Courtney exclaimed happily.

The school day seemed to last forever as the teacher slowly babbled on about what the difference between division and algebra was. Knowing this all too well Mariah put her head down on her desk and slowly drifted to sleep and in her dream she dreamed there that a beautiful unicorn was, waiting for her to slowly mount then gallop off.

"What's up girl?" Mariah asked Bella the unicorn. Bella just nickered and playfully nudged Mariah on her blushed cheek. "Alright, alright." Mariah fed Bella some blackberries then heard her name being called.

She woke up with a start just when Ms. Warner called her name. A tear trickled down Mariah's face in embarrassment.

Thankfully Ms. Warner hadn't seen her sleeping but the other kids did. They laughed and pointed. Mariah ran out of the room and all the way down to her horses stables. She sobbed and dug her face into her gelding white neck.

"Zan it seems like I've done everything wrong." She clasped on to her horses neck for a half an hour then wiped the tears off her face, got her halter out of her backpack and slowly put it on him. She pulled herself up on his 15.6 hand back then brought him to a trot. When he was warmed up she galloped him and spoke to him through her mind. She closed her eyes and just let Zan's power fill her body.

When Zan had enough galloping he shortened his stride in to a slow canter then a trot, and then he stopped. Mariah slowly opened her eyes and lead Zan to the lean too on the south side of the pasture. She took his halter off and laid down. Zan laying down next to her, his body temperature keeping her warm in the cold October winds.

When Mariah woke up, Zan was right by her and some of the other boarding horses. Mariah's eyes stung from crying the previous night.

Oh no!, she thought. Her parents must be looking for her. She sat upright, pet Zan a little more, then ran two miles home.

When she had gotten back to her house, she saw a police car parked in the driveway.

"Oh no," she murmured and ran inside the house. When her mom looked up she showed a relieved expression. Mariah could tell she had been up all night looking.

"H-hi mom,"Mariah said. Her mom frowned and asked, "Have you been sleeping in the dirt"?

Typical mom, Mariah thought - this silently. Then said, "Ya, i was sleeping with Zan."

Her mom gasped, then smiled. "I'll call your father to tell him you're alright. "Mariah smiled in relief, happy that she wasn't in trouble....yet.
