Hi Meghan

Writer's block is a dreadful affliction; loss of nerve, much worse. But don't worry. You can work through it.

First of all, there's no such thing as "can't". Believe that. Then find an idea. Draw on your own experiences, perhaps a person or a horse you know, for inspiration. Go on Google Images, type in a random word (perhaps your favorite color or breed of horse), pick a picture and think of a story you could tell about it.

Read endlessly; the more you read, the better you write. Look for stories everywhere. Carry a notebook and jot down things that take your interest. Keep your eyes wide open; live through your every sense.

Once you have an idea, the work begins, and if you break it down into small steps, it's not that hard. Just sit down in the chair and write. It doesn't matter if the spelling sucks, if the punctuation is non-existent.

Get the story down on paper, and it doesn't matter if it's awful, it's only a first draft. And once the first draft is done, take a step back, congratulate yourself - then leave it for perhaps three weeks (for a short story), before you come back to it and rework it and rewrite it. Once you feel it's presentable, you can take it to beta readers - people who'll read your work before it's published and offer advice. This site is a good place to find beta readers. Send it here, and I'm sure plenty of us will be able to offer advice.

I know from experience that it's terribly hard. The answer lies in that first draft. Once you have the idea, just write the story without caring if it's dreadful, because the first draft probably will be; but the story in your head is golden and beautiful, and the second draft will already be excellent, and by the time you're happy enough to send it here, it will be golden and beautiful. Don't give up. Write, write, write. Read. Live. See. Feel. Know your characters like they're real people. Know your story like you know your own past. Know your setting like you know your house. Never, ever stop writing. The best way to learn to write is simply to write.

Enjoy it! Writing is a lot of fun, whether you want to do it professionally, or just scribble a nice story for the fun of it. You'd be surprised at how much you can learn about life from writing down your daydreams.

Please note that I'm not a published author, just a very, very keen amateur. For an example of my work, scroll down the page (it's about halfway down) to "More than a Myth: Intro", the beginning of my story. No comments yet so the next part hasn't been put up.

me too

i don't write a story when i want to, i write a story when it comes to me. just start writing, and you'll pick it up, and even when they're rubbish, you'll get better and better.

writing isn't easy, no matter how many people think it is. just think of a story, don't write it down, but just think through it a couple of times, that really helps me.

I have time!!
by: jakiebabe

Hey, Meghan!

First it's not jakie mi babe, its jakiebabe.
Second we talked for like 2 hours on the phone one night, I wanted to write a story but you were busy so I wrote while you listened and we talked.

My problem is I can only write stories on the weekend at certain times because as you know I got a c on my report card and I have to get REALLY good grades this quarter or I can't go to summer camp with you! I have to study a certain amount for every subject, every night. Plus I have to stop not doing certain homework because I don't feel like.

I even have to study during the weekend now.We can write one soon, I promise, but seeing Jake is WAAAAAYYYYY more important than writing a story, so I NEED to do GREAT in school.

Love you!
