My horses... Bad and Worse
I met two horses a few years ago at a cow farm. I went constantly to see them for 2 or 3 years. My parents recently gave them to me ( about a year ago). The first horse is a draft cross mare.
She is a dominant mare, probably because of her size... She barely stands still for brushing, is lame in both front feet, throws her feet when I try to pick them up, she doesn't listen too well in saddle, and doesn't lead... I haven't had a farrier come trim her hooves since May.
She was basically neglected at the cow farm because of lack of experience on the owner's part, and due to her total wildness. Sometimes though all she wants to do is be around you. My pony almost died because his feet were so bad, his feet were curled like elf shoes, and he lost a lot of weight.
He will also not pick up his feet and will try to walk around 3 footed if he isn't tied. If he is tied he turns his but and puts a lot of weight on the foot I am holding. He also doesn't like grooming unless he is tied. He loves to come up to me when he isn't tied and hang around me. He also whinnies when I come for chores.
I am not totally experienced at riding yet but I do ride some tricky horses. I am considering selling my horses as I am running out of money and I don't feel like I have enough experience to train these horses. I do have a strong bond with them too so it is a difficult situation for me.
I have only ridden my horses 5 or 6 times in more than a year. Please give me some tips and give me your opinions about if I should sell them or not. Thanks!
