Gus, My first Horse... and hero
(Omak, Idaho, USA)
Ever since I was a little girl, I've always wanted a horse and I knew everything about them when I was 6. Like I knew that horses hold their breath when they jump.
Anyways... when I was 10, I asked my Grandpa, "Hey, can we go to Omak sometime?" My Grandpa told me we would go the coming summer.
So summer came along and we drove to Omak, Idaho. It was so fun, my Grandpa didn't tell me that he had a friend who owned 5 horses though so we drove over to this ranch and I said, "Hey grandpa why are we here?" And he told me that his friend, Bink, had some horses that I could ride.
So, Bink gave me reins and asked if I knew how to put them on and I said I did. He told me to put them on Gus. I did so and hopped on him (I rode bareback).
Bink told me to try and walk around the corral. I did so and after a few hours he left the gate open thinking he closed it and went to go get a cup of coffee.
Well, now he knows never leave the gate open when you have a horse crazy girl riding a horse. Haha. Well, I walked towards the gate with Gus and he pushed it open. We trotted out and behind the house to Bink's acres of property.
Gus went into full gallop. We ran across the Green Hills all day. Well, it was about 7:00 pm and I started to get tired and I jumped down from his soft back and let him eat. I rested on a mossy log and whittled away at some wood and then drifted to sleep.
I woke up at 5:00 am and looked around. I heard Gus neighing, I stood up and spun around to see a cougar and Gus fighting. The cougar saw me and tried to get me, I thought I was dead.
Gus jumped in front of me and took the bite to his neck. I screamed and picked up a rock and threw it at the cougar. He ran off. I threw my self onto Gus and cried.
Bink found me late in the afternoon and carried me back to his house. I woke up a tad bit later and herd my Grandpa say, "I got to go shoot Gus, I cant let him suffer."
I walked down the stairs and made my grandpa jump slightly by saying, "It's okay Grandpa... You can shoot us."
He walked out of the house and all I herd was a gun shot. I yelled "GUS!"
Bink came over. "It's okay. Here, let's go make some coco." I nodded and followed him downstairs. He gave me some coca and I fell asleep.
I woke up the next morning and Bink said, "Come on we've got a surprise for ya." I ran downstairs and ran outside.
I smiled and ran to Gus. I stroked his mane and cried with tears of joy. I looked at my Grandpa and said "I thought you shot him." He told me that he shot the cougar.
I turned back to Gus and heard Bink say, "You love this horse so much... you can have him."
I told him that I could never afford to keep him and he told me that he would keep Gus at his ranch and pay for him if I took care of him when I come each summer. I nodded.
When I ride Gus I feel... free.
