(WWII Movie - Don't Know the Name) Help with name?

During WWII, a teenager lives on a farm and his favorite horse dies while giving birth. Flash forward. He enlists in the army and is sent to an island occupied by the Japanese. While on the island he finds a beautiful horse which reminds him of the one he lost at home. He and the rest of the soldiers adopt it as a mascot. One day he has orders to leave the island. He can't take the horse with him. He and the others get in the ship and look out the back ramp which is still open. The horse jumps in the ocean and frantically swims toward the ship. All the soldiers are urging the horse on, but the rear ramp raises....(not going to give the end away).
