West Texas Sunrise Series #1 Stallions at Burnt Rock (Bagdon, Paul)

Determined to prove she can raise the best ranch horses in the West, strong-minded Lee Morgan agrees to put her prize coal-black stallion, Slick, against a neighboring rancher's flashy bay steed in a race of endurance. As news of the match spreads, gamblers and gunslingers pour into the formerly sleepy 1870s town of Burnt Rock, Texas. They place their bets and create a surge of lawlessness that threatens to turn the town upside down.

Although Marshall Ben Flood relies on his quick draw to keep the peace, he is in constant danger, and Lee wonders if she's made a terrible mistake in entering the race. When a tragic death triggers suspicion of something sinister affot, Lee takes matters into her own hands. And in the most thrilling ride of her life, she must summon every ounce of courage and faith she possesses to face down the evil that threatens her life, her ranch, and the man she loves.

In 1880s Texas, the spirited Lee Morgan is on the verge of developing the finest ranch horses the West has ever seen. When her prized mares are nearly destroyed by a band of wild, trigger-happy cowhands, Lee is infuriated and ready to spring into action to protect her horse farm. Her longtime friend, Marshall Ben Flood, is quick to come to her aid, but tensions are rising all around. The fallen bridge over the Dos Gatos River blocks the cattle trail, and it could be months before the massive herds can be moved on to market.

Meanwhile, the wranglers are growing more restless by the minute, and it's only a matter of time before more chaos breaks out. When the marshall orders a surly ramrod to move his herd, the strategy backfires. The riled trail boss isn't leaving without a fight, and soon the entire community is on the brink of an all-out range war. In a thrilling twist Lee and Ben race against the clock to avert the calamity about to descend on the town.

A new preacher arrives at the West Texas town of Burnt Rock to lead the eager flock of a burgeoning frontier church. Handsome and sophisticated, Reverend Warner soon wins the affection and respect of the congregation, but he seems particularly drawn to a lady rancher Lee Morgan.

Ben Flood is not taken in so quickly. He has shaken the hand of the new minister and found it heavily calloused, an odd thing to find in an educated man. And doesn't the minister have an unusual fondness for guns?

Ben's suspicions of the minister seem petty to Lee, who is taken with this man of the cloth. But is there something more substantial to the marshall's instincts? When a blizzard hits Burnt Rock, the truth plays out in both murder and redemption.
