Is My Horse Too Small??

by Lily
(Australia)

Hi! I have a beautiful, appaloosa mare named pebbles. I love her very much. I am about 5ft and pebbles is 12.2hh. I don't think she looks small but I was wondering about other people's opinion. She is fun loving, cheeky and goes with your skill level.

It depends,
by: Kaylee K.

It depends on how much you weight, and how stocky/thick she is. Honestly, it sounds like you're fine with her. 12 HH or so, isn't technically that small if you're about 5 feet.

So don't worry! :)

Chubby Pony!
by: PogoLvr

Height is a big factor, but weight (of the horse) is too. At sleep away camp, I rode a fat 13hh POA named Balto, and my legs barely went around his barrel, but when I ride Pogo bareback (15hh) my legs dangle a few inches past his belly. Really, what I go by is not really height on the ground, but height in the saddle. :) Hope this helps some.

Not 2 tall

I know exactly how you feel! I love this pony named graydon but he is really small! I don't think your too big. Try standing next to his withers, if his withers go below your shoulder that is a sign that you are outgrowing him. (sad face) good luck!

Pebbles can carry me easily. It is my height I am talking about. I don't go to shows and only trail ride and take the odd lessons.

weight
by: lucinda

it kinda depends on your weight, ponies can take up to about 18% of there body weight some hardy ones can get up to 20% so it depends on how much you weigh and how strong your pony is, if you were like 15 but were anorexic you could probably still ride your pony.

Well...
by: Sparkles

It sounds like pebbles is a great Pony! Unfortunately, if you want to go somewhere in your riding career, you may need a bigger mount. Also, as pebbles grows older and you grow taller, she won't be able to carry you anymore. If you are five foot, then you may need to start looking at other horses. But that doesn't mean you need to retire her or sell her. Maybe lease her to a beginner child looking for some extra time in the saddle. But of course, it's your pony, so you call the shots. Hope this helps...

Xoxo, Sparkles <3
