Free Hearts - Chapter 1

''Oh,come on Alex,'' said Amber. ''You're never going to get near Jess, never mind ride her!'' Amber exclaimed. ''I know what i'm doing!'' I replied. Now before I carry on, Jess, a dappled grey mare, has vicious habits and vices. She never lets anyone near for some reason. A reason, which I want to find out. I held out my hand, which had an apple in it. I stayed still, hoping Jess would cave in, and come to take the apple. Jess took a step forward. Then another and another and another! Then she sniffed my palm and took the apple!

Chapter 2
As she took the apple, I tried to lay a hand on her neck,to calm her. But Jess, was having none of it. She had her ears way back, nearly on her neck, had her teeth bared and rocked back onto her hindlegs and reared! I tried to avoid the trashing hooves above me,but it was so hard to. She seemed to be doing a Capriole or something, because she kept coming forward. And then the next thing I know, was that everything went black!

Chapter 3
I woke up to see anxious faces, doctors and nurses running around. I tried to get up, but a piercing pain in my right shoulder told me not to. The pain was so unbearable I fainted.
I woke this time to see that I had a cast all the way down from my left shoulder down to my wrist.I suddenly realised I was in hospital. "Honey,are you alright?" a famillar voice said. It was my Mom's. "Yes, Mom i'm fine! Is Jess okay?" I replied. I could tell by the look on my Mom's face it wasn't good news. "Well, Alex," my Mom half answered. "Mom, spill the beans!" I exclaimed. "Jess is gonna be put down!"

Chapter four
"NO!" I literally screamed. "NO! NO! NO!" I sobbed. "Honey, she hurt you!" my Mom said firmly. This was true, but Jess gonna be put down was unbearable. "When is she gonna be put down?" I asked, my voice trembling. I didn't want to know, but I had to! "Saturday" my Mom answered. Saturday! But that was a week away! "I want to go home and see her!" I said really firmly. "You can go home tomorrow" my mother replied. "No! I want to go home NOW!" I shouted. I didn't mean to, but something inside me just kinda snapped!

Chapter 5 - The Finale
I had a sickening feeling in my stomach as the car pulled up outside the stables on Saturday. The day Jess was going to be put down. I had to swallow hard to hold back the tears. Even though Jess had hurt me, I couldn't help sobbing like a baby. When I got to Jess's stable,I could see the vet with a needle in his hand. I panicked, like, MAD!
"Don't! STOP!" I screamed."Whoa,!" the vet held up his hand to stop me. "I'm just giving her an injection, to calm her" he replied. "What for?" I asked, even more in a panic. "She's in foal!" the vet smiled. I forgot the sickening feeling I had for a moment. But then it came back again. "But is she still gonna be put down?" I questioned him. "Oh gosh no!" the vet said aghast. I smiled broadly. "And, she's your horse now!" he exclaimed. I was so glad, I hugged the vet, then wrapped my arms around Jess's neck. That's why she reared! She didn't mean to hurt me. Or anybody else. She was just protecting her baby!And the foal would be my horse too!

Chapter One
"Avatar?!" I said, not knowing whether to be happy, confused, shocked or angry. "How- How?....."
"We all knew that Avatar was alive. But you didn't. So we wanted to keep him a secret until the right time. I guess that right time was kind of, now." Amber said sheepishly. I looked at Tom, then at my parents and Amber. "You all knew?"
"Yeah. While you were in hospital after the accident, we found Avatar roaming around in the woods. We were going to tell you the minute you got home, but you lost hope. You said that Avatar had to be dead after such a blow." admitted Tom.
"Are you angry?" said Amber looking shameful. I have to admit I was, but, Avatar was back! I had a beautiful baby back again!
"No. I'm just glad Avatar's back!"
We all laughed and hugged each other. Amber embraced me longer. It was lovely to have such a good friend and almost three new horses!
"Now, when am I allowed to go home? I'm sick of all these wires tickling my chest!" I laughed.

Chapter Two
"You really are big aren't you girl?!" I laughed as Jess snuffled my hair. It was true, Jess was about 1 meter wide! "You've only two weeks to go, haven't you?!"
"Melody, would you and Amber like to stay in the barn tonight?" Tom came around the corner and asked.
"YES!!!" squealed Amber who was in her pony Midnight's stall.
"I think that answers your question!" I laughed.
"I suppose so!" Tom chuckled and left the barn.
Amber looked over her stall door, "Sleepover!"

It was night time, and I was checking up on Jess one last time. "Hey girl." I said expecting Jess to turn around.
But Jess didn't. She was too busy sniffing her flank.
"No! It can't be! She has two weeks to go! Unless....." I didn't even want to think the thought.
"AMBER!" I shouted. "COME HERE QUICK!"

Chapter Three
"Amber! Come here quick! Jess is about to foal!" I shouted.
"Coming!" Amber said sleepily I could see her wakening to my shout.
"It's OK. Everything's going to be all right!" I reassured Jess. Jess got restless and flopped down to lie down.
"OK, what do you want me to do?" Amber asked, wiping the sleep from her eyes.
"Get Tom and Sarah if you can." I said, referring to the owner and instructor Tom and the head stable hand Sarah.
"OK, I'm on it!" Amber said before racing down the barn isle.
"You're going to be all right Jess." I reassured the mare again. A bit of water shot out from under Jess's tail. She was going to foal.

Chapter Four
"Everything's gonna be OK, Jess." I tried to reassure the mare. Jess flopped down on the straw.

A Few Minutes Later....

I see a hind leg appearing out of Jess's hindquarters. Then another. I go over to the mare. I grabbed the foal's hind legs gently and pulled. The foal came out. I wiped some of the sac away from the foal's nose so it can breathe. Jess licked the rest of the sac of the foal. I could see what colour it was: steel grey with a white heart on his forehead and a steel grey mane and tail. I could also see what gender it was: a boy.
"Good job, Melody. You delivered a healthy foal." Tom said behind me.
"Thanks!" I smiled.
"Yeah good job, Melody!!" Amber tapped my back.
"What are you gonna call it?"
"Hmmm...... Cupid." I replied. We all laughed and watched Jess and Cupid (the foal) and then went back to bed.
