Wincall and Reddy the sweetest filly in the world
This is Reddy, the filly I wrote about in Cool Horse Stories, right after she was born in April 2006. She died of a rare horse disease the following December, but I still love telling our story.
Reddy was her owner's first filly, and I was there forty-five minutes after she was born! There she stood, wobbling around on her shaky legs and trying to gain at least an ounce more balance. Surprisingly enough, Reddy did not seem afraid of me when I stepped into the stall. The filly actually hobbled towards me and began to investigate my extended hands. Before long, we were great friends. As you can see from the picture, I was given the honor to hug the sweetest filly in the world.
I went frequently to visit Reddy, and watched her grow taller and stronger. One Wednesday night, her owner walked up to me and asked me if I could think of a name for his filly. I told him I would think about it, and followed through with my word. A horse story had been appearing in my sketch book for the past month, a story about a pure red filly named Reddy. The name stuck in my head, refusing to detach itself. When I suggested the name, the man merely added a "Lady" at the front. Lady Reddy--it was perfect!
Time passed so quickly. I hadn't visited the barn for a while, for I was now quite busy with school. But sorrow was approaching more swiftly than an eagle in flight.
After church on another Wednesday evening, Reddy's owner told me with fearful eyes that Reddy had contracted a rare horse disease that only attacks one in 10,000 horses. The next day, I stayed at the barn for several hours, watching the stricken filly as she lay on the hard, straw-covered floor and praying that she would be all right. Two days later, Lady Reddy was gone. Her owner had buried her far out in the field behind the barn before I even knew of her death.
Reddy's owner has sold his horses this year, because he cannot care for them as well as he could before. He still owns the land, but no horses ornament the pretty pasture surrounding the barn. I have not met any other horses like Reddy, and never will. She will always be remembered.
