Aroura, the Appaloosa

Irish countryside

Irish countryside

*Bleep* Beep* Bleep* *Crash!*
"Arrgh!" 4 in the morning..." I grumbled. I look down on my floor and there is my white alarm clock. So that was the crash. I must've swung my arm about when I woke up.
"I wonder why my alarm clock is set so early?" I think to myself. I look out the window. My bed has a horse duvet on it and my peach colored walls are covered in horse posters. My floor is wooden, only with a fluffy medium sized rug next to my bed so when I jump out in the cold, icy Irish mornings, my feet don't hit a cold, wooden floor.

We live in the country, the Irish country, as I mentioned. We live on a green, grassy mountain, and run a small farm. Dad sells a few things in the market in Tralee, Kerry. We live about an hour away from Tralee, in the deep country, a windy road coming to our house.

Me? I'm fine with that. It's March the 5th, according to my phone I got for my 12th birthday. I'm 14 now. With fair skin and dirty blonde, waist long hair, and big, green eyes. Not too skinny, Mum always fills us up!, I'm not too fat, though, either. Dad says he works hard on the farm to provide for us, and we must not waste it by eating too much. I'm 5 ft, just enough to be tall in an OK way, and at least not too short, either.

"4:15......" I mutter. I hear a small whinny from outside, and I grin so much my face hurts. I don't care if it's... now 4:20 in the morning, or if it's still dark, all I care about is my precious, precious, Aroura.

I slip out of bed and pull on grey jeans, a blue polo shirt, and a black hoodie. I put on my boots, (now covered in mud from a trail ride yesterday,) and I pad downstairs, as soft and quiet as a mouse.

I pour some orange juice in a cup, and drink that so fast, I cough and splutter, trying hard not to wake my family up. In the end, I cover my mouth and cough over the sink so if any juice falls out, it will surf ever so happily in the sink.

I grab 3 apples, two for Aroura and one for myself. I run down to the stable in the cool, cold, night. It's not too cold now, it's only March and it's definitely gonna get warmer.

We own 100 acres of land so its great for me and Aroura to go on trails together. I open the barn door slowly, and our four horses whinny in delight. I go to the end of the barn where my baby is situated. "Hey, girl..." I croon. She is a beautiful Appaloosa, white with black spots, and one black sock on her left back leg.

I can almost hear her say, "Hadassa, where were you tonight?" I got Aroura for my 10th birthday, along with everything a horse could need - tack, food to last a month, (literally!) a grooming set, and riding hat. I was going to give her all the apples, but them I was aware of 3 other horses behind and beside me, so I halved the two apples and gave half to Aroura, half to Monsoon, another half to Heaven, and the other to Honey.

I feel my head nodding while I sit in Aroura stall after I muck it out, and suddenly, suddenly, I am off to dream land.
*
"Haddassa! Hey, Haddy! Where are you!!!!" Someone is calling me. Not loud, as if scared to wake everyone, but loud enough to wake me up. But what the heck am I doing in the stable! Then I remember.

I am suddenly awake, my eyes open wide. 6:50!!! My big brother, walks in, 15 years of age, and is shaking me. "Hey, Haddy, come on!" He is also wearing riding clothes, but surely we're not going on a ride now? I look up and see a face so much my own. He has lighter blonde hair than mine though, like sunshine. He has green eyes too, his hair a fringe, falling just over his eyebrows.

Me and Shay are actually pretty, close. In fact, we're best friends. Who said your brother can't be your best friend? Most people, if a boy is their BFF, it's their boyfriend. But me and Shay and really close! Most people fight with their brother, but I usually never. He has a freckled nose, I have freckled cheeks.

"Come on, let's go on a hack!" Shay says excitedly. "What, now?" I say, puzzled. "Yes, now! Come on, get out of the stable and saddle up!" I smile, and tack up Aroura. He gets up on Monsoon, and looks at me carefully. "Come to think about it, what ARE you doing in the stable?" He asks. "I woke up at 4:00 in the morning, and came down to the stables cause I had nothing else to do," I say simply. He nods his head, gently sinks his heels into Monsoon and is off in a trot. I laugh, pick up the reins, and follow him.
"Mountain Trail?" Shay enquires.
"Sure, why not, Aroura loves that trail." I say.

We gallop across the meadow, and watch the sun rise. Moosoon's black coat is glistening, and Aroura's hoofs are beating.

Ready for part two!?

Hi
by: Haddie

Hadassah/Haddie is not my real name, but my name is kinda nerd and it's one of my all time favorites, so I'm using it here. I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves it! I don't really have horse crazy friends either. We could be friends here. :) I haven't seen Flicka but it sounds good. National Velvet is my fave horse movie. Have you seen it?

Aroura, the Appaloosa - Part 2

Sorry it took a while!

Me and Shay gallop across the meadow, laughing, smiling, having fun. "Come on, let's go back," says Shay, still laughing with me, probably nothing. "Okay, okay," I say.

At the barn, the sun has risen and everyone is awake. Mum comes to us. "Uh-oh, angry adults at 12 o'clock...." Shay mutters. "Where the heck were you? We needed help!" Mum says angrily.

"Sorry, mum... um.. yeah.." Shay mumbles.

"Hadassa, go wake up the little lamb. She must wake up now." Mum says, her voice going all sweet and syrupy.

As she turns her back, me and Shay roll our eye at each other. "The little lamb!" I scoff.

"Haddasa, wake up the little lamb!" Shay says, in mums voice, mocking her. We fall about laughing.

"Haddie, come on! Stop messing around! Urgh!" She turns away again. Shay goes and helps dad. I walk into the kitchen.

"Go on, guys, hurry up!" Dad calls from the barn. I sigh.

Now, the "little lamb" is my little sister who mum and dad favor.

Aroura the Appaloosa - Part 3

At the table it is all sullen. Lisa, my little sister, is throwing a tantrum. Shay pulls a funny face at me, and I start giggling. "Haddie, what are you giggling about?" Dad snaps. I have a funny feeling he saw Shay pull the face, but wisely, I don't say so. Mum and Dad start up conversation. I cough.

"May I be exscused?" I say. "Yeah, me too." Shay says. Mum grunts. "Go to one of your friends houses," Dad mumbles. "Be back at 2:00, sharp, ok?"
"Yes, ma'am," Shay mutters.

As soon as we are out the door, we start running. "Lets go to Claudia's house," I say. Shay rolls his eyes. "You have GOT to be kidding!" He says, but he blushes. Since we -- me Claudia, aged 8, Shay has had a crush on her. He has never told her, but she told me she likes him too. I swore never to tell.

"Nah, lets go to Jaydyn's house." He huffs. "First Claudia." I say firmly. "Fine, fine." He mutters.

As we reach there, we go through the back fence and into her 80 acre yard. They own 8 horses. Mustang, paint, dun, roan, appaloosa, palomino, Clydesdale, and Icelandic. We go to their barn, and I spot Claudia in the paint's stall. She has a tan because she is actually Hawaiian, black hair, and amazing big blue eyes. She has shoulder length hair. She is wearing brown and black jean jodhpurs, a t-shirt with a horse on it, and long boots.

"Shh... Emerald, its okay..." She croons. "Hey, Claudia!" I say softly. She turns towards me and smiles. "Hey, Haddie, Shay!" She grins. She leaves the stall and comes over. "Wanna go for a ride?" She questions. "You bet!" I say.

We saddle up. Claudia goes on Emerald, (Emerald, the paint, is her personal cob). Shay takes the mustang, Rebal, and I take the Appaloosa, Rose.

We take a trail, and start talking. It was a lot of fun.

Aroura the Appaloosa - Part 4

As we cantered up the mountain and avoided rocks, we chatted about about everything. Our parents, her parents, her horses, life, fun things to do this summer together, and general. We suddenly found ourselves by a lovely little brook.

"Oh, wow, look!" Claudia said, dismounting Emerald, and taking her hat off. Shay gets off Rebel, and runs his hand through the water. "Wow, it's actually kinda warm!" He exclaimed. I looked around.

"Uh guys, how come we never found this brook... EVER!" I said worriedly. "Hmm... we probably aren't on my land anymore... remember the ditch we jumped over? Well, we're probably on a random mountain somewhere, but...." Claudia trailed off.

Shay walks up to her and looks at her carefully. "Did you know that we weren't on your land anymore?" He asks. He says it carefully, softly and quietly, not wanting to hurt her feelings obviously, but no one wants to be lost in the middle of nowhere, too. "No. I, I don't th-think s-soo..." She stutters, her eyes filling with tears.

I go and hug her. "Shh, its okay, we're not lost, we're... um... er..." I say, trying to comfort her. "Lost". Shay says flatly. Claudia goes to Emerald, pats her on the shoulder, and mounts. *Sniff* "We should try to get out of here and try to get home," she says.

Me and Shay mount. "Agreed." We say together. We trot around the mountain, in a forest, and suddenly there is a small house in the distance.

"Oh my gosh, look!" I squealed. We all canter up to the door and Shay dismounts the knock, only to trip over a rock and fall on the door instead.

Suddenly, the door opens, and a little girl appears. She's adorable, with brown, curly hair, brown eyes, and fair skin. She gives an adorable smile, and asks in a sweet voice, "Hi, I'm Erin, are you okay?"

Shay goes down on his knees so he is only a foot taller than Erin, and says, "Hey, darling, yeah we kinda are in need of a bit of help. We got lost and we really need to get home. Is it okay if I speak to an adult, honey?" I must admit, he has won the kid over. She smiles. "Jade! Jade! A boy band member is on our doorstep! They need help! JADE!!!!!!!!!!" Erin screamed.

I looked at Shay and he looked kinda pleased. Then I realized it. He did look like a boy band member. Suddenly, 4 girls appeared on the door. One about 7, one 10, another 13, and one our age. They all looked very the same, brown hair brown eyes, and jeans, hoodies, and converse. The eldest smiled.

"Hey, I'm Jade. These are my sisters, Lily (13), Natasha (10) and Skye (7)."

"Nice to meet you all," Claudia said, not smiling, eyeing Shay who was staring at Jade. And I had to make up for that.

"I'm Haddassa, this is Shay, and Claudia." I said, smiling. "Yeah, we kinda got, er, lost." Shay says. "Yeah, but we don't need your help, we'll... *fake coughs*... help ourselves." Claudia says rudely. Jade blinks, but doesn't say anything. "I love your horses!" She says instead.

I instantly like her, but deep down, there is something that tells me... DON'T TRUST HER.

Dedicated to Violet Brushstroke because she's been asking for me to write more of this story. I hope you all enjoy. The story is now 6 months forward so it's winter now, and Haddassa and Joel have been going out for awhile. Aroura and Haddassa are going to start competing more.

Part 14

"Soooo... are you competing in the Winter Showjumping this year?" Joel asks.

The day is chilly, and there's snow lightly falling, covering my johdpurs. This is the most magical time to be hacking. I can see my breath and the horse's breath in the air. The Winter Shows are going to be amazing this year I just know it.

"Yeah, wouldn't miss it for the world. Did you know they're being held in Belfast this year, not Dublin?" I answer.

He nods. "Doesn't surprise me, the roads going to Dublin have been blocked left and right. Seems like the snow has affected everyone." He says solemnly.

I duck as we go under a tree. "Are you... competing? You know, after-" I start to say but he cuts me off.

"It's okay, Haddie. I miss her too, but I have to move on. I won't be competing; I'm not ready for that but I will go." He gives me a sad smile.

1 week later...

I tighten Aroura girth, and breathe in deeply. "We're up soon, girl." She nickers at me, as if knowing that I'm nervous. I'm always extremely nervous at shows. "We're going to be okay though," I whisper.

Shay walks up behind me. "Guess what! Mum and Dad are up to date now with their bills!" He says excitedly.

These last couple of months Shay and Mum and Dad have been a mess of stress and finances. This is a massive relief to all of us.

"OMG, yes!" I squeal. He gives me a massive bear hug. Claudia comes up behind us and joins in the hug.

"I have no idea what we're hugging about but I'll join anyway," she giggles.

We all laugh and Shay tells her the news.

"I'm so happy for you guys." She says smiling warmly. She turns around as someone comes up behind us and tells us we're up soon.

"Okay, this is it," I say nervously.

I'll try have at least 2 chapters up a week. Please comment, and tell me what you guys want me to write and if I could improve in any way. Love you guys! - Claudia and Uno xxx

by: claudiahorselovr

*Rinnggg*

The bell screeches ahead. Lunch time. Finally. I drag myself outta my chair and I look for Claudia. She is probably coming out of Biology. Our other friends will meet us at a table, but me and Claudia always walk to class together.

Someone comes behind me and links arms. "What's up, girl?" Claudia asks. I shrug.

"Just hungry, that's all."

We walk into the canteen, and get lunch and sit at the table, just when our friends come up to us.

Sorry I couldn't write anymore been busy with stuff.

Aroura the Appaloosa - Part 12
by: claudiahorselovr

I look at the double oxer. I can do it, I say to myself.

"Are you ready, Dawn (Dawn is her nickname)?" If I'm scared, Aroura will sense it, and be scared too.

"Do you want to, girl?" Someone shouts behind me.

"You nutter! Still talking to horses I see?" Dawn skitters a little at the sudden shouting, but I manage to keep her steady.

"Woah girl. It's just some idiot. Stay calm." I turn Dawn around and I get a shock. Sharon and Jess are there. Sharon, in trainers, a tracksuit, and a tee shirt, because she is always in training clothes cause she ice skates, and Sharon, her usual cute self. A little pleated denim skirt and blouse, and ankle boots.

"Hey! You can't shout in-"

"Oh, Haddie, calm down. You're so horsey! Why didn't you come to the mall!? The three of us had a great time!" Jess says.

The three? Then where was Claudia?

"Where's Claudia?" I ask while walking Dawn into the stable. Joel walks by just then. I blush.

"Hey," I whisper.

"Hi, Haddie, how was training with Aroura? Did she make it over the the oxer?" He asks.

One, he is so embarrassed he's babbling. Two, he doesn't want to make a scene and three he isn't shy at all.

"Yeah! It was brilliant! I mean, she was brilliant! I mean.. uh... no. we... didn't make it again..." I go deep red hearing myself talk like such an idiot.

Joel just laughs and walks on.

"What was that all about?" Sharon asks.

"What was what all about?" I say innocently.

"You know-"

"Urrgh! I stepped in... manure!" Jess screeches.

Claudia comes up behind us. "Sorry I'm late. I was just.. talking with Shay." I raise my eyebrows.

"Just talking?" Sharon smirks.

"You were wearing lip gloss ten minutes ago! It couldn't have dried up already!" Jess says slyly.

Claudia goes a light shade of pink, but shrugs airily. "All right, we might have kissed once... or twice. But its allowed, he's my boyfriend!"

We all gasp. "Really? Is it official?" We all say.

Claudia shrugs. "Well, yeah, we've been on a date together and he asked me to be his girlfriend... so..."

"Squeeee!" Jess squeals.

I sigh. I love my bffs, but they didn't have the love horses like I do. Except Claudia. But she was so wrapped up in Shay, it didn't seem like she even remembered Emerald. I sigh as I start grooming Aroura, as I had walked away from the squealing. It was literally hurting my ears.

Aroura the Appaloosa - Part 11
by: claudiahorselovr

"He is sooo cute!" Jess giggled.

"I know, right. Haddie, you are so lucky to have a hot 15-year old brother! Not a squealing, baby brother!" Sharon moaned.

Claudia smiled and raised her eyes. Seemed like both of us had secrets.

"Claudia?" Sharon questioned. Claudia was sitting in a daze. "Huh?" She said, bewildered. Jess grinned.

"Truth or Dare?"

"Oh. OK... Um... Truth." Jess grinned at me. I grin back.

"What's up with you and Shay?" I say. Jess and and Sharon swooned.

"We... Came to an agreement..." She says slyly.

"No. Way. What did he say???!!!!" Me, Sharon, and Jess say in unison. Claudia looks pleased with the interest she caused.

"Oh nothing much... JUST ASKED ME OUT!!!" She squeals the last part. Sharon and Jess just about faint. Me on the other hand, am still angry at Shay. I haven't told anyone about our finance situation. I keep it locked inside.

"So when are you going out?"

"Tomorrow. Dinner and a movie. Cliche, I know, but I'm so excited!" Claudia giggles. I sigh. Why wasn't I at my riding centre?

Next day, I follow my heart and instead of going to the mall with my 3 bffs, I ride on the country roads to my riding centre. "Hey, Haddassa!" Joel walks up to me.

"Hi, Joel. How's Nutmeg?" I ask. She and Joel were on a cross county course, and Nutmeg broke her leg after falling in a ditch. Joel was OK. Bruised and scratched, but alive. Joel's face crumbles now.

"The vet was here yesterday. He said... He... I think he is gonna be put down." His voice cracks as he whispers those dreaded words.

"Oh, Joel! I'm so sorry! I... I'm just so sorry." I walk up to him and hug him. He holds on tight, and I don't let go.

In the hay above the barn, Joel pours his heart out to me. "The vet said we left it too long, and we should've put him down 2 weeks ago! Can you believe it! The idiot thinks I'll just put my horse down after... Everything!"

We're sitting, side by side, arms wrapped around each other. It's the closest we've ever been. We both know we knda like each other. We've hugged, but never gotten this close. His eyes flicker to my lips. I look at him. I push his fringe off his forehead. I tilt my head. Our lips touch, and I forget about my problems. About everything.

"Haddie!" Shay appears outside my stall where I'm grooming Aroura. "Hey, Baddie, can we talk? I know you're mad at me, but give me a chance to explain!" I look at Shay. Is he crazy? Does he think I want to hear him out. Kissing Joel an hour before felt like heaven. Heart racing, warm lips, a safe feeling. Now, Shay wants to talk.

I'm busy, can't he see? Reliving the moment in the hay. "No, I can't talk." I say shortly. "I'm gonna go riding."

"Well I'll come with you. Just wait till I tack up-" I push past him, leading Aroura.

"Go away, Shay Matthews."

As we trot on a trail, I think back to Shay. What was he gonna say. I sigh and pat Aroura. "I love you so much, girl. We get each other. No one else gets me." At least, I think.

Aroura, the Appaloosa - Part 10
by: claudiahorselovr

10 minutes pass. We keep mucking out the stalls. We keep grooming. We feed.

"Okay, Shay, time's up. What is going on?"

Shay looks at me, his eyes studying me. "Okay... okay... it's just...." Shay sighs. He exhales, blowing his wheat colored fringe. "Dad and mum haven't been keeping up taxes. They... are kinda struggling with finances."

Suddenly, Shay looks away from me. His eyes glisten. With tears. I jerk back. Why was Shay so emotional? His voice cracks. "And it's all my fault!" His voice shakes. He turns away from me.

We are both grooming our horses, so we are in different stables. He is grooming Monsoon. I am grooming Aroura. He puts his head on Monsoon's withers, and strokes him. I see him him press his lips together in effort to not cry. He takes a deep breath.

"Dad wanted me to get a job, Haddasa. And out of rebellion I didn't want to take it. Dad said it would be good for me. And to me, at that time, what the heck did Dad know what was good for me? So I didn't take it."

He drags a hand across his eye. Then he looks at me. "I'm so sorry, Haddasa. So, so sorry."

What was I suppose to say to that? "But Shay, if Dad told you we were going broke, why didn't you take it?" I questioned.

"That's the thing, honey. He didn't."

Aroura, the Appaloosa, pt 9
by: claudiahorselovr

As predicted, mum and dad were NOT amused. As soon as me and Shay reach the door, it flies open before my hands reach the handle. Surprise surprise, Dad was there. "Can't you at least for ONCE be an older brother and a help for us!" Dad hisses to Shay.

He (Shay) hangs his head, and this time, he looks affected by dads rage. I didn't understand. He always gave a bored look, or picked at his nails, or yawned, but this time, he looked serious. "You are over 45 minutes late!" Dad says to us. I look over his shoulder, because Dad hasn't raised his voice once, and usually he unleashes his anger. The breath catches in my throat. Police. Dad takes a deep breath, and glares at us." I'll deal with you later," he says.

As Shay tries to step in the door, dad blocks him. "Not now, Shay. Me and your mother are..." He racks his brain for answer. "Busy..." he ends. Suddenly, dad looks defeated. He looks at Shay tiredly. "Go and... groom the horses. And explain to your sister..." He nods his way in the direction of the police, who are still talking to mum. "That," he says, after a couple of seconds. He shuts the door, and me and Shay are left on the doorstop.

I look at Shay questioningly, and he racks his hand throw his wheat colored hair. "Well?" I say fiercely. "Come on, baby sis, we'd better go to the barn," He says. I open my mouth angrily, but Shay interrupts. " Then I'll tell you....that." As we groom, the horses, time goes by. Shay tells me what's happening.

WHAT IS HAPPENING? WHY DID THE FAMILY KEEP THIS FROM HADDASSA? IS SHAY REALLY AS CLOSE TO HIS SISTER AS SHE THINKS? AND WILL THE RELATIONSHIP OF SHAY AND CLAUDIA GROW? FIND OUT IN PT 10! KEEP FOLLOWING, AND PLEASE COMMENT!

Love,

Aroura the appaloosa part 8

"Do you think they were really home alone? That place gave me the creeps." Claudia says. "I don't know." Shay says, and the subject is closed. No one knows what else to say. "Okay, we're nearly home," I say. Shay groans. "Dad is gonna FLIP when he sees us so late! We are already 15 minutes late." Claudia smiles sympathetically. "He probably won't even notice" she smiles. "You obviously don't know our parents well," I mutter. "Honestly, they think we're 4 and 5, not 14 and 15!" I whine.

As predicted, mum and dad were not amused.

Aroura the Appaloosa - Part 7
by: Claudiahorselovr

As we trot and weave through the trees, we talk non-stop.

"Did you see the poor kids faces? Filthy!"

"Didn't you think Jade was a little suspicious?"

"Are you sure we are going the right way?"

Aroura the Appaloosa - Part 6
by: Claudiahorselovr

"You can use the phone, if you want." Jade says, smiling. "Er.. thanks" I give a watery smile. Claudia comes up to me. "Pity we didn't bring our cell phones," she whispers. I look over my shoulder, making sure Jade is out of ear shot, and whisper back, "Yeah. I was thinking, do you... like... have a feeling we shouldn't be..." I say the last word super quiet. "Trusting her." I end.

Claudia gives me a side ways hug. "Let's just phone and get out of here." She replies back. "So, you also don't trust her?" I mutter. Claudia puts a finger to her lips, telling me to be quiet. I sigh.

As I lift the receiver off the phone, Shay yells from the other room. "Girls, I know where we are!" I grin at Claudia. "Yes!"

"Look, at the valley over there! It's the same little valley on the right hand side of mine and Haddie's house!" He yells. Jade comes up behind us. "Well, I'm glad I could help," she says. She smiles while saying it, but I can't help but notice she isn't looking me in the eye. I shrug it off, though. "Well, technically, you didn't actually help us..." Claudia mutters. I give her a warning glance. "Well, we best be heading, cheerio, goodbye, sayonara!" Shay says quickly.

We head out the door, and mount up. I glance behind my back. "Let's get out of here. You won't believe what I saw."

Comment for the next part, tell me what you think!

OK, thanks! " COMMENT FOR PART 6!"
by: Claudia

Thanks! I'll try keep it updated! Here is part 5...

We walk into the house, and it's really cute and quaint. I look up the walls, and a lot of photos hang. "Are you here all by YOURSELF!?" Claudia says, and pick up a different feeling from her. A bit of jealousy, (okay, a lot of jealousy!) and some annoyance. I also feel that she doesn't trust her, like me. Shay? I don't know. "Sit down, I'll make you a cup of tea!" Jade says.

SORRY I COULDN'T WRITE MORE, BUT PLEASE COMMENT!
