Am I ready for a horse?

by Horse Dreamer

I have been riding for 2+ years. I can walk, trot on the correct diagonal with great rising, canter nicely on correct leads have good posture and can jump 2 ft. I have been to shows before but I am showing a lot this summer.

I have experience in catching, grooming, tacking up, lunging, feeding, mucking, filling hay nets... all that kind of stuff.

If I do get a horse soon, I plan on getting one around 10-12 years old. My parents have the money situation figured out nicely, they just want to make sure I am ready.

I will be boarding and I will have a trainer for anything I have questions about or need help in any way once I do have a horse.

Please comment down below and let me know what you think! Also, I do have plenty of knowledge when it comes to breeds, heath, etc.

Yes, I'm definitely not going to rush into it! I'm waiting a little while longer. I'm going to start looking and possibly trying out some horses in the next month or so. I will definitely be riding it a few times and getting to know it a bit so I know for sure if its the right horse for me!

Thank you for the advice!

Hey! That's SO AWESOME that you might get a horse! Really amazing. I've wanted a horse since I was 5 and I'm now 13 and still no horse...yet. But I have been riding for a long time.

Anyways, by what you wrote I think you have a lot of knowledge and you sound pretty prepared about getting a horse. Just know that it will not be as easy as you might think even with you experience that you already have since you haven't owned a horse. I think you should get a horse.

But other than that, congrats! And enjoy it! And let us know if you do :-)

The way my mom was able to tell if I was ready was seeing if I was responsible with my dog and my chores. Seeing that I was, she got me one. Also, my trainer talked to her about a horse that she found that was perfect for me.

your choice

It really is your own choice but if you feel ready, then get a horse. I would just not rush it so take your time in finding what horse will suit you and what you want to do with it.
